Facebook. A lot of people have a Facebook account these days. A lot of people fail to consider taking safety precautions. Here are some tips for you to consider if you use Facebook.
Make sure you use the privacy settings and protect your information and photos from prying eyes.
Do not put your work and social schedule on Facebook, finding your home address is easier than you think.
Give some thought to what photos and info you put out there, keeping in mind that employers routinely cruise Facebook as part of their background investigations.
Don’t put photos of yourself looking straight ahead. These photos can be lifted out of Facebook along with your personal information, and presto: your identity has been stolen.

Human Trafficking. Have you heard about this? It has been going on for years, and it is happening right here in your own community. People from other parts of the world are desperate to live in our country, and will do or promise almost anything, including their freedom, to be here. Sometimes people pay someone to get them to Canada, thinking that once they get here, they will start a new life, find a job and raise their family, only to find out that they have been sold into some form of slavery. They are isolated, often threatened with calls to Immigration officials, violence, or worse. They are sold into things like domestic servitude, manual labour, the sex trade, and sometimes they are sold for their internal organs.
Do you know of someone who is new to our country and who seems stuck in their circumstances against their will? If so, call Crime Stoppers.

The illegal use of prescription drugs is sky rocketing. These drugs are extremely addictive. Drugs that are commonly for sale on the streets now are Percocet, morphine and morphine patches, and oxycontin and oxycodone. Other than the patches, these drugs can be swallowed, ground up and snorted or injected with a syringe, and even smoked.
Continued use of these drugs can cause long term physical and psychological harm. Because these drugs are so addictive, users spend their time getting high, or trying to find money to buy more of the drug. Often this means turning to a life of crime.
These people are killing themselves slowly. The social costs are enormous. If you know of someone who is selling these or any other dangerous drug, call Crime Stoppers.

Do you know what a curbsider is? Do you know how to check the history of a vehicle? Can you pick out a stolen car?
The Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC) defines curbsiders as con-artists who pose as private sellers, but are in the business of selling vehicles that may be stolen, damaged, rebuilt, odometer-tampered or have liens against them. Vehicles sold by curbsiders put unsuspecting buyers and their passengers at risk.
Follow these 5 easy tips to making the right deal:
1) Avoid Curbsiders – buy from a registered dealer!
2) Check the car’s history – get yourself a Used Vehicle Information Package
3) Check the car’s registration
4) Have your mechanic check the car
5) Don’t take any risks
If you would like more helpful information, please visit the OMVIC website. If you have any questions, you can contact OMVIC by email at omvic@omvic.on.ca or by phone 416-226-4500

During the summer months every year, persons involved in growing marihuana can be seen in and around the following areas: swamps, corn fields, wooded areas, along rivers, and rural rental properties with large acreage. Their crops only have to be tended to approximately once every two weeks. In late September or early October, the grower returns to harvest the plants, leaving the roots behind.
Common indicators of outdoor marihuana grows include: Abandoned vehicles parked on side roads or trails, people observed walking in remote areas for no apparent reason, bags of fertilizer, planting trays or chemicals located in remote areas, well-trampled trails in wooded or swamp areas, cleared out areas in swamps, wooded area or corn fields, and numerous signs appear out of nowhere indicating "No Trespassing."

Recently, there have been several robberies from people either at the ATM, or just after they have attended the ATM to get their cash. While using ATM’s is handy, Sarnia Lambton Crime Stoppers asks you to think about your safety when doing so.
Our suggestion is, when possible and especially during the evening and overnight hours, use an ATM which is inside a store or a mall where there are people around. These machines are also less likely to be tampered with. If you must use a bank ATM, use the drive through machines, and keep all windows rolled up except for the driver’s window through which you are accessing the machine.
The ATM’s in stores may have higher user fees, but isn’t your safety worth an extra dollar or two? This is something Sarnia Lambton Crime Stoppers and your local police services would like you to think about.

How many times have you complained about high taxes, high insurance rates and high electricity rates? How often have had knowledge of crimes but didn’t think it was your business to say anything? Well…think about it.
Some of your tax dollars pay for police coverage, and if there is more crime, then more police resources are needed. More crime leads to more insurance claims being made, and you pay for that through higher premiums. Do you really think that criminals with marihuana grow operations are paying for the massive amounts of electricity that they use, or, do you think they have bypassed the meter so you end up paying for that as well?
If you are a concerned citizen and are fed up with having to pay for criminal activities and you have information about them, DO THE RIGHT THING, and CALL Crime Stoppers today. Don’t let criminals spend your money.

If you see someone whom you suspect is driving impaired, please do not call Crime Stoppers, time is of the essence. Instead, please call “911”, or “STAR OPP” if you are outside the City, and provide police with as many details as possible.

Fall is here, nights are getting cooler and we all like to stay inside where its warm, but the cooler weather doesn’t stop the criminal element from being outside. Break and enter and theft crimes continue to plague both home owners and business owners alike. People aren’t outside as often and don’t observe suspicious people and vehicles cruising the neighbourhood. It’s getting dark earlier, making it easier for thieves to enter garages, buildings and homes. Make sure your entrances ways and garages are well lit, and check to make sure locks and doors are secure. If closing a cottage or trailer for the winter, don’t leave valuable items out in plain view. Have a trusted neighbour check your property for signs of tampering if you go on holidays. We are all responsible for making our communities safe and watching out for one another, so be vigilant and report suspicious activities.

You have heard it many times, SPEED KILLS. It does. Ask any police officer who investigates vehicle collisions and they will tell you that speed kills. Fair to say we all know that speed kills, the elusive part is why we continue to speed? Now lets mix speed and alcohol, a deadly combination to be sure.
Police put the message out in poster campaigns and news releases to the public, and are out there daily enforcing the laws, still the numbers climb. Why? The solution is simple. It is up to everyone of us to simply use our heads and obey the law.
Remember if you do not speed, and do not drink and drive, you dramatically improve your chances to ARRIVE ALIVE.

How many times have you complained about high taxes, high insurance rates and high electricity rates? How many times were you aware of criminal acts that were taking place or are even now taking place but didn’t think it was any or your business to say anything? Think about it because you pay taxes for police coverage so if there is more crime then more police are needed. If there is more crime then more insurance claims are made and you are paying for that through your insurance premiums. And do you really think that criminals with a marihuana grow operation are paying for the massive amounts of electricity that they are using, or do you think they have bypassed the meter so you end up paying for that too. If you are a concerned citizen and are fed up with having to pay for criminal activities and have information about them, then do the right thing and call Crime Stoppers today. Don’t let the criminals steal the money right out of your wallet.

Driving on Ontario highways is a privilege that some of us take for granted while others respect it for the benefits that it brings. How many times do we hear about people being convicted of impaired driving then prohibited from doing so, only to learn that they are out driving again in contravention of their court order? Isn’t this a slap in the face to not only our justice system but as well as to the licensed drivers who respect this privilege. People who drive motor vehicles while disqualified from doing so are committing a criminal offence and Crime Stoppers needs your help to catch them. Marihuana growers have now harvested most of their crops and are taking their business indoors for the winter. Home grow operations are modified houses that are used to grow large amounts of marihuana. Significant changes are made to them in order to supply light, water and ventilation to the plants. Illegal hydro bypasses can cause charging of the ground outside which can create shock and electrocution hazards to unsuspecting victims such as neighbours, children and meter readers. A home grow can steal upwards of $1,000.00 of electricity a month and can generate revenue of up to $1 million dollars per year. The cost of these houses affects us all in one way or another. Whether it’s through rising hydro bills, house insurance, loss of home equity, or increased criminal activities. However, the cost of working together to have a safer community is……priceless.

CRIME OF THE WEEK
October 09, 2006
Now that October is upon us a lot of the marihuana plants have been harvested and are no longer in the fields. That doesn’t mean that they just disappeared. It only means that the dealers now have them indoors drying them out to manufacture and sell. Some signs to look for are high levels of condensation on windows, strong odours, increased traffic flow to and from the residence as well as people carrying bags or boxes out. This is harvest season and Crime Stoppers needs your help to identify locations where marihuana is being kept for the purpose of trafficking. Your tip could help police remove drugs from the streets as well as putting some cash in your pocket.

CRIME OF THE WEEK

With the cooler weather now upon us, area farmers will be working hard to get all of their crops off the fields. In addition to this, marihuana growers will also be working extra hard to get their crops out of the fields and bush lots to bring them indoors to dry. This will be the time of year that a lot of suspicious activity will be taking place throughout Sarnia and Lambton County and Crime Stoppers needs your help to identify the locations that marihuana growers take their crops to process. Since these plants are bulky they will require a lot of space and there will be strong odours and moisture generated from them drying. These crops may be getting processed in a rural location, home in small town Ontario or in the city of Sarnia. Some have been processed in abandoned warehouses and garages.
If you have any information about this or any other serious crimes in Sarnia Lambton, call Crime Stoppers. If your information leads to an arrest, you may receive up to a $2,000.00 cash reward. CRIME OF THE WEEK
September 5, 2006
Last week we asked the public if they knew what was tall, green leafy and worth about $1000 ….. per plant. We also asked who would harvest crops at night or at times when nobody was looking as well as what types of crops they were harvesting? Some people thought that we were talking about the jolly green giant whereas others got our message loud and clear. The only giants we’re looking for are the ones that grow over 6 feet tall and are hiding out this time of year in corn fields, bush lots and other secluded areas and then make their way into basements and sheds to be packaged and sold. So this week’s trivia question is, who doesn’t need a little bit of extra cash this time of year? Why not earn it by calling Crime Stoppers today with your tip on suspected marihuana growing locations.
If you have any information about this or any other serious crimes in Sarnia Lambton, call Crime Stoppers. If your information leads to an arrest, you may receive up to a $2,000.00 cash reward. Who would harvest crops at night or at times when nobody is looking, and what type of crops are they harvesting? Do you ever wonder if pilots see “holes” or “patches” in corn fields from the sky and wonder “what caused that?” Are they crop circles or have we been invaded by aliens? The answers for these trivia questions are all the same. It’s marihuana season and Crime Stoppers needs your help to identify locations of suspected marihuana plots. So lets work together to solve yet another trivia question which is….. “How many marihuana plants will Crime Stoppers seize this year with your help? Last year over $5 million worth of drugs were taken off YOUR streets because of YOUR help. Give us a call that helps us all, call Crime Stoppers today.

These mischiefs took place on Cardinal Lane, Devonshire Road, Egremont Road and Mocking Bird Lane. The suspects entered garages, vehicles and a boat and stole several items.
