A1 Security Tip of the Week

Bicycle safety is an important issue and all cyclists should know that they are subject to the same rights and responsibilities as drivers.  Bicyclists are subject to the rules of the road under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.  Bikes are defined as “vehicles” and must ride on the road and not the sidewalk.  They must ride with traffic (same direction), even if there are marked bike lanes.  Smaller wheel based bikes, like children’s bicycles are exempt.  (Check your city has by-laws).

Some important rules to remember are:

*No double riders unless bike is designed for such

*Ride your bicycle as close to the edge of the roadway as possible.  Bikes are not permitted on the 400 series highways.  If there is a marked bike       lane, ride single file. This is for your safety.  Cars must pass a cyclist leaving a one meter gap between.

*If there is a pedestrian crossover, cyclists must walk their bike across this marked area.  Bikes do not have the right of way to cross over the road in  these areas.  Cars are not expected to stop for bike riders unless they dismount their bike and walk it across the marked crossover.

*It is mandatory for cyclist under the age of 18 to wear a helmet.  Helmets greatly reduce the risk of injury in the event of a collision or fall.

*Make sure your bike is equipped with proper lighting and reflectors as well as a bell or horn.

*Use correct arm signals when making a turn.

In the months of April, May and June 2022, Sarnia Police responded to four collisions involving cyclists, three of them had injuries to the cyclist.

Enjoy the remainder of the bicycle season and be safe out there.
