Internet, Email & Telephone Scams

We are all by now familiar with the idea that people will go to great lengths to try to get our money….. or are we?

Both Lambton OPP and Sarnia Police have received calls about people being victimized by “pop-up” threats on their computer. The recipient of the pop up message is told they have done something illegal on their computer, and they are instructed to send money to prevent their computer from being “locked up.”

The police and Sarnia Lambton Crime Stoppers remind you that when you receive these kinds of emails, or any of the “get rich quick” types of emails – do not respond to them – simply delete them.

Similarly, telephone requests for personal banking information by those claiming to be with your bank should be regarded as suspicious.  Do not give out your personal information to anyone who contacts you by telephone.  Hang up and call your branch to confirm.  Remember, a bank will never call you and ask for your information.

If you have any information about this or any other serious crimes in Sarnia Lambton, call Crime Stoppers.  If your information leads to an arrest, you may receive a cash reward.  You do not have to reveal your identity or appear in court. Crime Stoppers does not use Caller Display or Call Trace.  Sarnia Lambton Crime Stoppers can be reached at 332-TIPS, that’s 332-8477, or toll free at 1-800-222-8477.
